Mechanical Failure: The Overheated Wheel Bearing

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) identified a defective wheel bearing as the primary cause of the East Palestine, Ohio, train derailment on February 3, 2023.  This component overheated and failed, leading to the derailment and subsequent hazardous material release.

Sequence of Events Leading to the Derailment

The city was originally settled as Mechanicsburg before being renamed East Palestine. Its early economy was heavily influenced by manufacturing and rail transport, which played a critical role in the movement of goods and resources. Industries such as pottery, brickmaking, and glass production thrived, contributing to regional economic expansion.

Role of Defect Detectors

The train traversed three hotbox detectors designed to identify overheating components:

  • First Detector:  Recorded a bearing temperature 38 degrees above ambient levels.

  • Second Detector:  Noted a 103-degree increase.

  • Third Detector:  Detected a critical 253-degree rise, triggering an alarm.

Upon receiving the alarm, the crew initiated an emergency brake application.  However, the bearing failed before the train could halt, leading to the derailment.

Contributing Factors: Inspection Practices

Investigations revealed that Norfolk Southern had implemented policies limiting railcar inspections to under one minute.  This expedited process raised concerns about the potential oversight of defects, including issues with wheel bearings.  Rail unions and safety officials have criticized such practices, emphasizing the risk of missing critical safety concerns due to rushed inspections.
